Frenchman Charles Brodel Crowned European Champion in Hydrofoil Big Air
15-Year-Old Finn Flügel Reaches Semi-Finals and Finishes Fifth
The premiere of the Hydrofoil Big Air competition has a shining winner – Charles Brodel from France, a five-time series world champion, confidently prevailed with a clear points lead over his rivals, winning not only the World Cup on Sylt, but also securing the European Championship title in the spectacular kite discipline. A new addition in Hydrofoil Big Air, created specifically for the world’s largest Kite-Surf event. Brodel, who was able to show his full dominance on the water and in the air in both the semi-final and the final under very choppy and difficult conditions, was visibly happy with the competition: “These were exactly my conditions, that’s when I have the most fun and I’m very happy to win here,” said the newly crowned European champion. Best conditions now for the 25-year-old to win his sixth world title in a row in November. This will be decided in Jericoacoara, Brazil, the only other Hydrofoil Big Air station on the Qatar Airways GKA Kite World Tour. Second place went to Spaniard Lorenzo Casati, third to Swiss Peer Schnyder.
The 15-year-old German Finn Flügel successfully fought his way into the semi-finals in the morning after winning his heat against three other riders. It was just not enough for the big final, in the semi-final the young shooting star had to admit defeat to the later winner and the later second-placed. “Not quite as well as I had hoped, but I’m still mega happy with my result, hopefully it will go all the way to the final next time,” said Flügel after his fifth place.
The Kite-Surfers already started the first heats in the afternoon, here the spectators can look forward to the absolute top stars of the scene in the further course of the day and in the coming days. Among them, the current number one in the men’s competition, Airton Cozzolino from Italy, the two-time world champion from Australia, James Carew (2021 & 2022), the Spanish world champion from 2016, Matchu Lopes and the defending champion Kiko Roig (also Spain). The German top riders Alex Middeler and Keanu Merten will also intervene in the action today and want to win their heats. The 18-year-old world champion Capucine Delannoy, the co-favorites Camille Losserand (Switzerland) and Charlotte Carpentier (France) as well as the two Germans Sonja Bunte and Susanne Schwarztrauber, who also want to have a say in the title, are at the start for the women.
The current competition can be seen LIVE on stream at ran.de and Joyn.
