Defender GKA Kite-Surf World Cup Sylt 2024 Returns with Hydrofoil Premiere

Westerland, [August 1, 2024] – The Defender GKA Kite-Surf World Cup Sylt is returning, promising once again exciting competitions and spectacular action at Brandenburger Beach in Westerland. From August 20th to August 25th, 2024, the best kite-surfers in the world will battle for the coveted titles. In addition to the Kite-Surf discipline (Wave and Strapless-Freestyle), Hydrofoil champions will also be crowned for the first time – including European Championship titles.

Reigning World Champions and Previous Year’s Winners Back for Kite-Surfing

The men’s field is led by the current number one, Airton Cozzolino from Italy. With his impressive skills and experience, the reigning world champion is certainly one of the top favorites for the title. The German top riders Alex Middeler and Keanu Merten are also ready to compete with the best in the world. Keanu Merten, in particular, managed to secure third place on Sylt last year and will certainly do his best to be successful again.

In the women’s competition, the field is led by the Frenchwoman Capucine Delannoy. The 17-year-old is not only the reigning world champion, but also a two-time defending champion on Sylt. With her impressive performance, she has already shown in the past that she is one of the best. But she will be challenged by strong competitors, including Camille Losserand (Switzerland) and Charlotte Carpentier (France). Both were able to impress with their performance last year and will certainly give everything to wrest the title from Delannoy. Three German riders, Sonja Bunte, Susanne Schwarztrauber and Giulia Bohmerle, will also take part in the competitions and delight the German audience.

European Champions in Hydrofoil Big Air to be Crowned on Sylt

But this year there is a special premiere: In addition to the Kite-Surf discipline, the European Championship in Hydrofoil will also be held for the first time. This exciting addition promises additional adrenaline moments and ensures even more variety in the competition.

Among those taking part are the German riders Linus Erdmann and the Kite-Surf U-16 World Champion Finn Flügel, who, at just 15 years old, is already one of the favorites in this competition. Flügel has made a name for himself in recent years and will certainly cause a few surprises.

“As long as I can remember, I’ve been to Sylt every year with my parents, and I learned to kite there at the age of 6. For me, Sylt is, so to speak, my home spot when I’m in Germany, and I couldn’t be happier to be allowed to start there. I would of course be happy about many visitors who cheer us on and support me.” – Finn Flügel, Kite-Surf U-16 World Champion

In addition to the thrilling competitions, visitors can expect a varied supporting program from our partners on the extensive beach promenade. We are particularly proud that Defender is the title partner for the second time. Defender is a brand known for its quality and performance and fits perfectly with the Kite-Surf World Cup.

“Defender is at home on the beach. In 1948, more than 75 years ago, its still valid silhouette was designed in the sand of Wales. We are pleased to be back on Sylt with our icon and to be part of the Kite-Surf World Cup. In addition to the exciting performances of the international kite-surfers on the water, Defender offers visitors on land not only a kite-surf workshop, Ocean Cinema and a qualified look into the starry sky, but also test drives with our current models. At Brandenburger Beach in Westerland, our 4×4 adventure brand can also be experienced live in the Defender Lounge. We look forward to the visitors and spectators in Sylt.” – Jan-Kas van der Stelt, Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover Germany
