Defender GKA Kite-Surf World Cup Sylt Officially Opens

The world’s largest Kite-Surf event kicked off on Tuesday with a spirited opening ceremony at Brandenburger Beach. Watched by Dr. Frederik Hogrefe (State Secretary in the Ministry for Interior, Municipal Affairs, Housing and Sport), Tom Hartmann (GKA Tour Manager), Christian Okon (Organizer MMP Event), and many hundreds of spectators, nearly 50 top athletes marched in with their national flags to great applause. The German team, with seven riders who aim to make a splash in all competitions, were especially celebrated, of course.

European Championship in Hydrofoil Big Air Gets Off to a Spectacular Start

The Hydrofoil Big Air competition, taking place for the first time, was able to celebrate its premiere even before the opening ceremony and got off to a successful start with the first heats. With good wind conditions around 20 knots – and plenty of sunshine for the numerous visitors – the athletes showed spectacular tricks and jumps up to 20 meters high. Four riders were already able to fight their way into the semi-finals. The two German hopes, Finn Flügel (U-16 World Champion) and Linus Erdmann, are promisingly in the fourth round and can secure their place in the semi-finals tomorrow morning. “Sylt is one of my home spots, so I definitely have a home advantage,” said 15-year-old Finn Flügel before his heat.

After the wind subsided somewhat in the afternoon, the competition was ended for today, Tuesday. According to the current schedule, Hydrofoil Big Air will continue tomorrow morning, and the Kite-Surfing discipline could start the first rounds as early as tomorrow afternoon.

Reigning World Champions and Previous Year’s Winners at the Start

The men’s field is led by the current number one, Airton Cozzolino from Italy. After his victory in Cape Verde, the reigning world champion is also one of the absolute top favorites on the North Sea island. Close on his heels will be none other than the two-time world champion from Australia, James Carew (2021 & 2022), the Spanish world champion from 2016, Matchu Lopes, and the defending champion Kiko Roig (also Spain).

The German top riders Alex Middeler and Keanu Merten are also ready to compete with the best in the world. Especially Keanu Merten, who sensationally finished third on Sylt last year, has set his sights high. “My goal is definitely the podium again,” said the highly motivated 19-year-old about the upcoming competition.

In the women’s competition, the field is led by shooting star Capucine Delannoy. The 17-year-old Frenchwoman is not only the reigning world champion, but also a two-time defending champion on Sylt. She will be challenged by, among others, Camille Losserand (Switzerland) and Charlotte Carpentier (France). Both were able to impress with their performance last year and will try to wrest the title from Delannoy. Two German riders, Sonja Bunte and Susanne Schwarztrauber, will also be at the start from tomorrow.
