German Hope Keanu Merten Faces the World Champion
The world’s biggest Kite-Surf event is running at full speed – and in the premier discipline of Kite-Surfing, Thursday was crunch time for the riders. After the first heats were already able to be run on Wednesday afternoon, the women and men have been battling it out in alternating rounds since the morning for the coveted spots in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. Technically demanding not only due to the choppy and stormy conditions, but also the format demanded everything from the athletes. Both elements of Kite-Surfing were on the program, Strapless Freestyle and Wave. Strapless Freestyle traditionally impresses with artistic aerial maneuvers with spectacular tricks, Wave with more classic surfing and high-class maneuvers in the wave. There are six trick attempts each, both elements ridden directly one after the other without leaving the water in between. In the end, the best trick, the best wave and the third highest score of the run are scored, so to speak the second best trick or the second best wave. So, anyone who wants to triumph on Sylt must fully master both elements and be able to cope with the extraordinary conditions with up to 41 knots today.
From a German perspective, 19-year-old Keanu Merten is already in the third round of the Defender GKA Kite-Surf World Cup Sylt. The shooting star, who lives in Spain, prevailed in the all-German duel with a strong performance against Alex Middeler and will now face world champion and current No. 1 Airton Cozzolino in the third round for a big showdown. The two know each other very well from last year, Cozzolino was second on Sylt at the time, Merten third after a sensational competition. “Now in the next round against the world champion, just have fun and give it your all,” said Keanu Merten with a smile after his successful second round.
Defending champion Kiko Roig and two-time world champion James Carew are already in the fourth round.
In the women’s competition, the German Susanne Schwarztrauber is successfully in the third round. The 35-year-old, who has also already finished third on Sylt, will now face Brazilian Kesiane Rodrigues. She is considered one of the favorites for the title. The 18-year-old defending champion from France, Capucine Delannoy, together with the third-placed Camille Losserand from 2023, showed the highest scores of the day. Both are also in the third round.
